In the case of Pins, it's because of this:

5x broken 16 centers are just sitting there. PC sees 'em and tries to grab 'em all, but you already grabbed and tossed 'em.

I started work for one large corporation in RTP as a Systems Engineer Contract to hire for Kenda Systems - Kenda systems paid me $32K more than the final hire salary at the corporation. I never got that

I really miss HR. I was agency-side - staffing, recruiting, maintaining (PRN and perm) - for a couple of nursing agencies for most of my working life. I'd do it again in a heartbeat if there was a chance around here at all (the only nursing agencies are home health, which I try not to touch at all). I'd do a more general agency, especially recruiting, which I love because of the relationships it takes both with workers and clients, but the nearest one is nearly an hour away. Breaks my heart.

And yes, a good agency HR type can really help bend the will of the hiring company toward accepting people they would never have considered before, but you have to have a relationship with that recruiter and they have to have an excellent rapport with the client.

It's all sales negotiations between the staffing agency and the corporation, but it's wonky that the company would hire you at lower than your rate you were working for the agency, because I can tell you that they pay the agency a LOT more for your work. For temps that we hired that would make $12/hour, our agency would make $18/hour typically per every hour worked by the temp. So not only did they pay less by hiring you directly, but then they saved even more money by giving you a pay cut.

You can totally do recruiting as a consultant! There's plenty of companies that will take you on as a "contractor" recruiter and are so happy to do so because they don't have to pay you nearly as high as a fee/commission as they would a full-fledged agency. A lot of them will even provide you access to corporate Monster and CareerBuilder accounts at no charge to you. I have a couple of friends who worked at my agency who went on to be pretty successful independent recruiters.

I'd sorta looked at that a couple of years ago, and meant to look more, but found more scams than I liked so I backed off. It may be something to consider again once The Boy is out of the hospital and life returns to normal around here.

Aw, I'm not familiar with the hospital situation as I'm a bit new around here, but I hope everything works out. I know what you mean about a lot of scams; if you're really interested you could always try reaching out to the agencies that are that hour away and explain to them that you'd be interested in a remote recruiting position. Most agencies worth their salt have plenty of technology available nowadays that there's really no reason a recruiter ever has to be in an office, except for maybe occasional meetings.
