Ok, here's my final piece of information on community, beyond anything said here or on any of the lower-caste forums/books...

Pay attention to how many downloads of certain scripts off of greasy. That gives you an idea of how many elite turkers there are, and it's not that many.

Not tooting your horn or anything, but you make that group what it is. The rest generally still falls into the Facebook mTurk trap. And I figure that since you're a pretty active poster here, there's no reason for me to engage there.

Yeah those folks exist, for sure. The mTurk community seriously has some weird grouping of folks in it. Even I've had days where I'm like "I should just toss this site on flippa because this is ridiculous" but for every brain dead hobo who will never figure out how to open two tabs or who can't stop himself from spewing racist garbage onto the feet of others there are 10 folks like @NBadger @gurlondrums - actually no I'm not even going to tag anyone - you've been here long enough to know what I mean. Our community is a revolving door of awesome people.

I think, really, especially after meeting @Totally Not , a fair share of the blame falls on people putting themselves out to help others. I think we all know a couple folks tried to help, got in too deep, and were like "..wtf am I doing this for?" LOL

Not blaming you or anything, God knows I get your POV more than most folks since we "grew up in the same hood" - just giving my perspective as someone who has tried to put a lot into the overall mTurk community and deals with a good sampling of very angry & mean people as a natural result of it LOL. Have had to do a lot of perspective flipping the last few weeks especially.

Though really, I just want you & MG back on night crew so it doesn't look dead in here at 2AM. WTF are you even doing with your life, being a productive human or something? Ugh.

Ok, I know I haven't posted here (except to say hello). But, I do want to say that as a SAHM whom has "dabbled" with MTurk since 2013 (I skipped a little over a year til around the time I joined here a few months ago.) I am very thankful and grateful for TH. I was lost when I came back to MTurk as I had been out of the "GAME". (I had last used MTG as my go to for tips) I came back to find that gone and stumbled upon TH and stuck with it. Through the "search" feature here I was able to inform myself on what scripts to use and am back to making what I "need" to make. (thanks to others asking questions I found my answers, lol) I tend to not post as I am usually either working or tending to the 2 mini me's. (I homeschool one and the other is special needs) But, on my downtime I love to read the banter and use TH as a go to if there is a problem going on with MTurk.

Long story short: Thanks for everyone that has helped anyone here. I can say that it has lead to help others.

 

Just the fact you're willing to put your foot down from day 1 and say "look, I'm going to provide shit, but the best of it is going to be behind a pay wall and if you don't like that good luck other people are doing stuff for free if you think that's good enough"

I have said, for over a year now, the mTurk community as a whole would have been better served if free scripts were never a thing. Because they're just not sustainable and are built to fail IMHO.

I have a very positive attitude about the transfer of money and I think that everyone should charge each other for what they do for each other. Much of the time, it'd end up the same as it is now "Oh, you filled me in on that HIT? Here's $5, thanks. Oh, you need a script for that other HIT? That'll be $5". When my brother and I were hanging out, we would do work for each others' businesses on a running ledger like this constantly. I think that a lot of people have an unhealthy distaste for using money regularly like this, possibly out of bitter associations with money itself.

When you do something "for free" for someone, you're generally implying that you expect them to return the favor in the future when they can, ergo, it's not really free. To me, an exchange of money front-loads this transaction and makes it much less vague and much more honest.

 

You mean, I can throw money @Totally Not , and get scripty good stuff?

 

I've even written paid scripts for people from this site that have absolutely zero to do with mTurk. Lol.
