    The Browser Extentsion API that they're talking about is the new plugin system for Firefox 57. People have known about this for months now so them posting something a couple months back about it makes sense.

    The basic summary is Greasemonkey decided to redesign how they do scripts to fit in with the new thing, and as such old scripts may need to be rewritten if they depended on the old functionality. Platforms like Tampermonkey jumpped through hoops to maintain compatibility, but at the cost of speed.

    So either they fix the scripts to work with the New Way or, switch to Tampermonkey to maintain compatibility with your old crusty scripts.
