meanwhile, I'm struggling to get breakfast.
Was going to make an omlet but there were no eggs
ok cereal, no milk
instant oatmeal, went to get hot water out of the water cooler, no water
then while I'm dragging a 5 gal bottle of water across the kitchen Dave grabs my bowl of dry oatmeal and puts it on my desk (children). I go to get it and set it down to get my wheelchair trough the doorway and he grabs it and puts it back on my desk..... @Hummingbirdee I'll be needing to borrow that shovel

 

I don't like blue lights (especially in my rear view mirror but that's a different story) but there's a house by the lake here that puts blue and white icicle lights on and it reflects in the lake and looks so beautiful, so I agree that context matters. Me, I have white icicle lights around the decks and colored lights on the bushes. I also like red and white candy cane lights

The whole point of Christmas is to be festive as shit.
It's not to try to make your house look sexy or raise your property values.
White lights are ho-hum, since they're the same color you see all goddamn year.
Might as well look up at a street lamp or stare at the ceiling in a Walmart, if you're gonna go with white lights.

Icicle lights are so pretty, and I actually had never thought of doing like a red/white candy cane thing. That would actually probably look really nice, now there's another idea in the mix

I suppose I could somewhat agree with that, at least about white being ho-hum, but I do tend to kind of be a boring and simplistic person, so maybe ho-hum white lights match my personality . But I am really feeling Edna's thought about the candy cane thing, that sounds simple enough to not be overkill, but festive enough to not be boring.

I guess where you live makes a difference, too.

If you live somewhere that gets enough snow that you get sick of it rather than excited about it, white lights are even more ho-hum and colors are what the season badly needs. Where I lived at this time last year (Oregon/Idaho border), it was -20 degrees, constantly snowing, and the town of ~10,000 I lived in didn't really clear the roads at all (and literally did nothing to the sidewalks, they were around 6ft high of packed snow/ice by the end of the season lol).

We had huuuuge icicles on the house, so there was no need for anything like icicle lights.

Some of the point of all the winter color overkill is to overcome the dreariness of winter, seasonal depression, etc.
That's why we have such tightly-packed holidays in the winter. Winter needs pick-me-ups.

 

I lived on the Oregon Idaho border too, in Ontario. Can confirm that they did not plow the roads or the sidewalks. God, that was terrible. So terrible that I sped up my plans and moved out way before winter just in case. They got snow the day after I moved.
