I didn't realize they had gone to the subscription method as well....I hate that. I haven't updated Office for that specific reason. It costs you so much more in the end and you get updates forced on you that might ruin everything you had just learned.

I use CS6. I know the latest versions (CC) are subscription based and I absolutely wanted zero part of that. Not to mention, I've seen lots of designer friends mention issues with the subscription version + not wanting to do a monthly payment thing.

I'm not sure if you can get CS6 (non-subscription) anymore, I haven't looked, but it still does the job well. Either way, no matter what version you go with, there are tons and tons of tutorials available that work pretty well across multiple versions. The only issue is that some tutorials are specific to CC because of some new features, etc.
