    Ego lifting can definitely become an issue.
    Problem is that "the core" is not just the abs.
    The benefit you get from a balance ball is probably predominantly increased proprioception.

    I'm personally a fan of keeping it really simple with mostly barbell workouts:

    Main:

    Deadlift
    Squat
    Lunge
    Bench Press
    Overhead Press
    Row (Bent + T-Bar)
    Pull-Ups

    Auxillary:

    Curl
    Skullcrushers
