True story, when I was writing desktop code before, it wasn't very popular to use human-readable databases. We read/wrote files as raw streams and implemented finite state machines to read them. We used to scoff at people who used SQL/XML/etc. for storage/retrieval as using EZ Mode.

Finally had the chance to walk up to the store to buy Christmas Scotch for the boyfriend! It's hard to surprise each other with anything when you both work from home and only one of you has a car. Hah.

Lol it was back when a 20GB hard drive was like "WOAH HOLY CRAP HOW ARE YOU GONNA USE ALL THAT STORAGE?!".

It saved space, and for games, it made it much more inconvenient to cheat simply by editing save files.
