It's a positive feedback loop with people who are addicted to being offended, because under the pretense of "being attacked", people who would otherwise feel unimportant suddenly feel as though they're meaningful and the center of attention.

Aside from drugs, traumatic injury, disease, etc., there's no consistent way to break neurological connections. You can only replace habits with other habits. That's why people who quit smoking, for example, have much more permanent success when they take intentional steps to replace their triggers with new responses.
