I love these impromptu script classes. Kadauchi explains things better than CodeAcademy:emoji_star::emoji_star::emoji_star:

While 99.9% of the time I think just looking at other scripts and hacking away is a great way to learn, one of the things that really helped me understand how scripts did what they did was reading/understanding what the DOM is. You can read through the entire W3 help page on html/js/xml/etc in like 2 hours max and it'll give you a fantastic base understanding of wtf is going on in websites/scripts/etc.

    http://www.w3schools.com/js/js_htmldom.asp

I have always just written scripts and iterated through until they worked. But it was always mindless work, when I took an afternoon and read through all of that I had a much better grasp of what I was actually creating when I sat down and wrote code. YMMV of course, but it helped my brain wrap around what I was actually doing, and I'm the type of person who thinks reading books on coding / taking Coursera (sp?) classes on that kind of stuff is a huge waste of time/energy.

Obviously there are super hand-holdy versions but IME the W3S site is clean, well structured, and doesn't waste time with excess bullshit. There is a huge difference between memorizing commands and understanding what those commands do.

To build on this, I recommend looking around on the Mozilla Developer Network as well. W3Schools has, in the past, received a lot of criticism for their resources. It has since improved, but still remains lackluster at times. I've found the MDN to always be high-quality and have only heard praise for it.

MDN reminds me of Microsoft's resources site. Just too much information, directed in too many directions, for pure beginners. I definitely prefer MDN when I'm trying to learn something in-depth, but just look at them side-by-side. W3S has like 250 words per page, hardly any of them technically involved, whereas MDN is calling their guides "modules" and shit. It's made for developers, not random Joe Schmoes just starting to learn.

Do we have crafters/party planning lovers in our midst? My mother-in-law's 70th birthday brunch is coming up, and I'm not sure what would work for centerpieces and need to bounce ideas around....

You should come to Chicago for it. Beer's on me (if I don't get roped into working, like I did when @FedNandlers was here). :emoji_beers:
    As a drummer, :yesyes:

Does she have any specific likes that you know of? TV Shows? Music? Food? Flowers? anything really... I would figure out some of her likes and maybe use that.
