Javascript Memory Management:

- You do not directly manage memory in Javascript.

- Everything in Javascript is passed by reference, so you're always dealing with pointers. Even when you assign a primitive, you're allocating a primitive in memory if it doesn't already exist, and then setting the variable reference to point to it.

- Automatic Garbage Collectors are responsible for freeing allocated memory.

- Specific vendor-specific innovations aside, Garbage Collectors generally work by occasionally (sometimes on an interval, sometimes hinted algorithmically by the code you call) checking whether allocated items on the heap can be accessed from the code that created it (really understanding how closures work can be key here, and are a major tripping point).

- Unless you specifically null out the reference, nothing sitting in global scope will be caught by the garbage collector until the tab is closed.

- Closures can be the devil.

- Circular references can be the devil.

- Everything that is not a primitive is an object.

- If you're inlining anonymous functions as an argument to another function, you're technically creating and defining a new object every time the calling function is run. This is because anonymous functions are also just objects with a code property and methods for being called (along with a few other properties and methods). A good optimizing compiler / JIT engine like Chrome's V8 can optimize many of these cases out, though.
