If they sent pics and it looked nice do you think it might be worth jumping on or should I look for a prebuilt somewhere since buying the parts I want on their own are so expensive.

    Found this:

    http://cpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Intel-Core-i5-4690K-vs-AMD-Ryzen-5-1600/2432vs3919

In a nutshell, the Ryzen does better for multi-threading (might be better if compiling huge amounts of code while turking), but single thread use is pretty bad. That said, seems like a decent deal, but you might be better off getting the same parts new. My biggest concern would be how much this has been used, and if it's put together well.

Oh thank god, @NBadger kept it wholesome.

I have 4 technically, but I share them between work computer and turk computer. If dayjob gets busier, it gets more monitors. But I always try to have at least 2 for turk because only 1 is Heathenville and I am not going back there. Goal is to have six one day.

That benchmark is actually what made me consider upgrading to it for the multi core. Do you think I should look for the next up on a CPU? I feel very lost in this. I finally have the money I need but have no idea what to actually buy to upgrade my pc.

As the others have said, it's always a risk buying used. How they look vs how they function are two entirely different things, which is hard to tell when buying used from someone online (sellers might be lying about conditions, not telling the whole truth, or they simply don't know how to tell). If it matters to you at all, there are new Ryzen chips coming out soon (last I heard was rumored to be this spring).

Parts are indeed quite expensive right now. I've never purchased USED PC parts. I'd rather spend a little more on new and feel a little more comfortable knowing the condition that my parts are in + warranty + longevity.

I have 1 monitor, and everything belongs in its own tab or window, in full screen. Only alerts may infringe upon other tabs. It's the least efficient setup I can possibly think of, but it keeps me sane because I can't multitask at all.

The priority that I check certain tabs and windows is very important, but that's an awkward conversation to have with this particular tab. I imagine it's like having 4 kids, where you love them all, but you know damn well there is one you love less. I love you guys...but let's just let the conversation end there.

I could get just new then, that's worth it for me if it's not a crazy difference(I thought the GPU would be). I mainly don't know what to actually buy to be honest.

I'll be honest, I was an AMD guy back in the day of Athlon's, and then, it was a really good price point to compete with Intel. My biggest concern with AMD today is that the single core experience tends to vary wildly, and personally, that just irritates me. If it's JUST for this one particular application, you'll probably see good results. If you're looking to program/compile AND do other stuff, I would stick with Intel.
