This HP is really picky and can only use certain ram- that's why I had to return the ram I got from Newegg in early Dec. I guess cause they want you to buy it from them. Got the compatible from Crucial., but it's expensive.

What version of Windows do you have? If 8 or 10 you should be fine unless you replace your motherboard.

 

7 and roommate says I should go to 10.

Yeah, but that's another added expense unless you have the ability to get it from an educational institute or something like that. AFAIK there's no way to get a free upgrade any longer to win10.

Well, windows 10 is free to use as long as you like, because Microsoft doesn't care; they just want installed numbers. You can just download the iso from Microsoft and install it. You get a small watermark in the bottom right corner of your screen if you don't purchase a license, otherwise they don't limit your functionality at all.

 

You should be able to retrieve your key with a keyfinder tool such as https://www.magicaljellybean.com/keyfinder/

Then you can activate Win7 on the new SSD. At least that's what we used to do at my previous job. Win 8/10 are different.

I agree with the upgrade to Win10, but I think your biggest performance benefit would probably come from the SSD. I doubt your case has the room for this, but I boot off of an SSD and have a 1TB HDD for storing media, etc. But again, not sure if that's really feasible.

 

So, are you saying the memory leak could be with my hard drive? I wonder if there is a way to check that. I have read some things, zillions actually, while trying to figure this out, but many of the ways to check things are way beyond my understanding and know how. And roommate wants to me to learn myself- I am pretty good with researching but some of this, like I said, is way over my head.

I doubt its necessarily the hard drive itself, but some corruption in the underlying "guts" on there could be entirely possible, but it's a guessing game for me with limited information. Tell your roommate to freaking help you because you've put in the time and effort to do it on your own and are spinning your wheels. Ugh, sometimes people in technology can be so annoying..
