Plumber for leaks, general contractor for a remodel. Some plumbers can tile & do all the remodel stuff, some can't (or, wont) so if you're doing anything beyond a repair you probably need a GC.

"Handyman" is how you end up with a nasty moldy bathroom in 6 months. Painting a bedroom? Alright, it may look like shit but no harm done at your worst case scenario hiring some rando off craigslist. Anything with water or electricity find someone w/ license & insurance lol.

Lowes/HD are fine places to start because they'll answer your stupid questions for free (not hating, I have asked tons of stupid questions) but you get exactly what you pay for there since 60% of their staff nowadays doesn't know anything as they're just min-wage employees generating body heat. They send semi-intelligent salesmen (YMMV wildly based on location & if they hired someone who has experience but just failed in the business or just some guy who is good at sweet talk) out for freesies for major projects and most can be scheduled right from the website so no dealing with humans until absolutely required lol. Best to do the tire kicking there in my limited experience.

 

At least I don't feel so alone now.
