The boxes will send salesmen pretty far. A good GC is more likely to charge you a fee to come to an estimate whereas HD/Lowes wont. Neither will let you do what you're wanting to do most likely.

That said.. Uhh, tiling is by far the most difficult part of that job. Is it just a ceramic/whatever rando material they use shower enclosure? A sawzall will take it out (turn off the water first, be careful of pipes) lol. They usually use cement backer board (google hardibacker IIRC) for shower builds AFAIK. Seal it & go.

Best to look up local codes etc etc etc. License bonded blah blah blah. But yeah if you can tile you can do the rest so long as you're not moving pipes.

The closest HD is like 35-40 miles away, and I figured that was too far since something I heard them talk about on the radio said 30 miles lol.

I had a moment like this last week at KMart. Ours is super depressing and sad and we only go there when we have to because there's really nowhere else in town to get some things from. I was buying some sponges and matt was buying a scrub brush, it's like 8 at night, and this lady is trying to talk Matt into a stupid Kmart card. NO. She keeps going. He keeps thrusting cash at her, and she wants him to use the keypad for no good reason, and I'm like, WHAT IS HAPPENING? WE WANT TO BUY THESE TWO OBJECTS. TAKE MY MONEY AND GIVE ME THE CHANGE PLEASE! She got super snippy with us too. We had already been waiting for some insane reason cause a lady was arguing about the peirce of a shower road, left to prove she was right, and the lady decided she didn't feel like voiding out the 2 purchases and ringing her up again...so there is just a long line of like 5 folks picking up rando odds and ends, waiting on this Grinch. This is while several employees stand around closed registers bullshitting.

I worked in retail too, and I wanted to slap a ho. She was literally annoyed with Matt for using cash instead of a card. DO YO JOB LADY! I would have been fired for that level of attitude, no joke.

Only thing I will say on this as a former GC is HGTV is not a reliable reference for anything. HD and Lowes you will usually get solid info because many of the employees are former tradesmen that the slowdown caused them to get other jobs. Ask around with neighbors and friends for a solid local contractor and you'll be in good hands.
