well I'm sure if we got a map of "where all the jews live" most of them are in the northeast, so it makes sense I guess. I've just always had jewish friends, so I never stopped to think about it.

I grew up in CT, with a lot of NY friends. Maybe it's just a new yorker thing

 

I grew up in an area with a lot of jewish folk, which is what I think is the common thread for that phrase. I also say bubbe, bisl, bupkes,chutzpah, verkmlempt, feh! kvetsh (but I always spell kivetch) Etc etc etc

I just assume it's from the regional area I learned all my slang growing up. I didn't even realize I knew so many yiddish phrases until I moved. It was just par for the course around home.
