    If you do opt for a Gear, I 100% recommend that you get a screen protector for it. I have banged it against so many things and without a screen protector it would definitely be super scratched by now.

    Matt and I use this one, 6 pack with wet install and they're super durable.

    I'd say the Flex 2 or Alta. I had the original Flex for 3 years and then got the Alta.

    I have the non pro gearfit2 and like it a lot. Only real differences is the waterproofing and the pro does continuous heart rate monitoring whereas the non-pro will check at intervals. Neither of which were a big deal to me at the time.

    If he's a bit computer saavy, he could make his own watch faces. The Samsung watch designer software is WYSIWYG and medium level ease of use (I wouldn't say easy cause it takes a bit of finagling).
