I did some freelance work in my early and mid 20s. This is absolutely not true. There is *some* pressure from the marketing departments of the bigger sites to tread lightly reviewing product from current advertisers, but nearly all of that is absorbed by the senior editorial staff. The only honest example I can think of was Jeff Gerstmann's dismissal from Gamespot in 2007, but both Jeff and Gamespot came clean about why that happened.

The problem is people want criticism to be objective, when it isn't. Game reviews are opinions, not science. It's good to find a writer or general personality whose tastes you align with, or one you at least respect, and follow their work. Also, don't treat scores like the end-all representation of what a game is like. Read the text. It's there for a reason, and they probably address why certain people won't like a particular game. Hell, this applies to movies, books, music, and anything else too.
