Costco is selling an Inspiron with an 8th gen i3, 12GB ram for $470. It's super miserable to take it apart and drop an ssd in it at a later date, but under $500 is a rough budget so you kind of have to take what's out there. You're over the chromebook garbage zone, but still under the midrange price. Getting up to around $700 brings you a lot closer to as good as you could reasonably need to turk, but if the budget doesn't allow then you have to make do.

If it isn't urgent, you might be better off waiting for the end of July or early August for a back to school deal at Costco, or even Black Friday for direct orders from Dell et. al.

It's kinda urgent lol, but I can only go up to 500. I'm kind of between a rock and a hard place. I have a crap laptop right now, but I'm making pretty good money every week on mturk with it. So anything better than this would be a huge upgrade. The laptop I have now crashes at least once a day, usually in the middle of a hit.

$500 is a decent budget for a laptop, as long as you keep in mind the constraints of the specs. Don't have 700 tabs open, be selective on what scripts you are running at one time, get rid of the bloat that will come with it.

 

Are you married to the idea of having a laptop for some reason -- ie, portability? You can find desktops with much better specs at a much lower price.

 

I usually run mturk and 2 or 3 scripts, and will now have turkerhub open. But that's it, and I don't leave tabs open, that drives me nuts lol

 

Not particularly, but I broke my back a couple of years ago and I can't sit at a desk for very long. Having a laptop lets me move when I need to.
