Then again, I'm probably not the right person to ask.

I had a non-academic HIT from some start-up get rejected, for an illegitimate reason. When the requester refused to communicate, I tracked down his business partners and investors and sent them an email explaining the situation and indicating the requester was the sort of person that would refuse to pay trivial amounts of money for work that seemed necessary for the early success of their business, and that they should consider whether that was a stance that best represented the sort of company they wanted to become.

All of a sudden, the requester couldn't be communicative enough, and he offered a big bonus compensation HIT, which I refused. It isn't about the money: I did a certain amount of work for the level of compensation promised, which is what I expected to receive.
