That is just so wrong and what is wrong these days :( Middle school 6th to 8th we had all the same wood shop metal shop etc etc then in HS it was geared to teach as the trades are in the real world....makes me really sad that kids no longer get to learn useful trades and skills unless a family member teaches it.

If I had a book, you better believe I'd have my students buy it. I can almost taste the royalties.

We have that stuff in WNY, called BOCES, except teachers have kind of given it a "not good enough for Regents" stigma.

Sex ed was removed from my local high school a few years after I graduated.

When I was in grade school we still got swatted on the ass with a vented paddle for maximum impact...all for just goofing off a bit. But look at me now...

Where I grew up in NY it was required but that was also over a decade ago. If you couldn't balance a checkbook you couldn't go to high school lol. But, school district to district varies anywhere sadly. They did try and bar me from more tech classes in high school because I was a chick and the shop teacher who taught theater tech had to fight for me to be allowed in after my guidance counselor tried to steer me to take more female appropriate classes (which I also took cause fuck stereotypes.) You just gave me some hella nasty flashbacks to regents exams though! We also had BOCES out on the island.

We only had sex ed in 7th grade and it was called "exploration of the wheel".
And pretty much all we learned about were STIs and female contraception.

Ahhh, BOCES. That takes me back, man. Never went there, but my brother did. My jr.HS/HS had wood/metal shop classes and car repair too. I got into wood shop, but could never get into the metal shop because it filled up too quickly every time. The coolest part about my HS was that they offered CISCO Networking and I got to take the CCNA and got certified before I graduated. :emoji_nerd:

Semi-related, I found out that Chemistry wasn't required for a Regents diploma but I was forced to take the class anyway. Counselor wouldn't let me drop it, so I spent the rest of the classes playing tons of games on my GBA flashcart and taught myself the Japanese hiragana/katakana charts. Such an edgy rebel, I know. :emoji_sweat_smile:

Is this the part where I admit I went to a private Christian school?
I got none of that useful shop/home-ec/sex-ed stuff. Instead I got science teachers trying to explain how evolution was false and memorizing verses every week for Bible class.
