We didn't get the day off growing up, but I lived more in Southern Michigan so only some of the students hunted. Now that I live in Northern Michigan and the name of the school even includes the word "rural," it is a given that most of the kids won't be there so the day won't count anyway.

 

My birthday wasn't during the year so I never had that but as long as my grades were up and I stayed out of trouble I was allowed to skip a certain number of unimportant days of school a year. I was/am too much of a goody two shoes to ever cut class but skip school with parental permission sure! Some of my favorite trips to the beach were days my sister and I took off mid week to get some deli bagels and snapple and have a little fun.

You must be around New York. Those schools take more time off every year than I've ever heard of. Of course they get a lot less summer break too.

Missing just for the sake of missing isn't really an option for most people anymore. Since government funds are now tied to attendance most schools are super punishing when it comes to missing time. My niece missed 10 days one year because she got the flu twice and ended up in the hospital for two days the second time. The school failed her and told her she had to repeat the grade because she exceeded the allotted nine days for the entire year. My sister had to go to the school board to get it overturned.

And a friend of mine ended up having to unenroll and home school her kid for the rest of the year last year because they went to Europe for three weeks and the school wouldn't approve it and flunked him even though she tried to get it all approved and all the work beforehand.

 

Our school boards in NY are so back assward that they will tell you not to send your sick kid to school, then harass you all day about how your sick kid not being in school is going to hurt their grades.
