Don't rent modems. It's such a rip-off.

 

Charter didn't charge for the modem when I had them but instead only charged for the router so I just used my own router.

Honestly that is a lot better of a way to do things as it is fucking hell doing support on consumer owned modems lol

 

I replaced the router (some linkys) but they installed a router/modem combo_-

 

Is there some advantage to getting a modem/router combo? Why do so many people have that?

If they aren't charging you for the modem you can just turn off the wifi and use your own shit.

No 2 in 1 units are fucking garbage. They only exist because ISPs like them for ease of installation.

 

i wish I was there when it was installed to complain. prob saves concast some complaints. It's just as easy to reboot two boxes instead of one

 

ISP will also block heaps of ports. I use my own hardware.

 

Mine is a combo and I love it, but I bought it myself instead of using the ISP crap. It has been with me through 4 different moves and all my settings are saved, just have to plug it in once the ISP activates the internets.

 

Technically modern modem + routers are 3 in 1 units.

Router + Modem + Wireless Access points.

Getting separate hardware for each one is always better but just having a seperate router and modem is good enough for most users.
