I always wonder which employers allow their employees to do something like this on company time. It's a lot easier to imagine how people get by on minimum wage in a place like SC when you can grab a 2-bedroom for like $500 in the city. That minimum wage is ~69% of CA's minimum wage, but a 2-bedroom apartment in many parts of California costs more like $1,500. Their rent is 66% less while only taking a 31% reduction in wage. That's a massive difference. Additionally, they enjoy lower gas prices.

Woah, where can you get a 2 bedroom for 500?! Do you mean renting? Cause I used to pay 650 in rent alone for a tiny 1 bedroom studio in an extremely bad neighborhood and that was the cheapest I could get unless I wanted to move an hour away which wasn't an option. When I lived in a better neighborhood it was more like 800+ easily. And that's just a one bedroom. I lived in a complex that had 2 shootings in 2 years, it wasn't a great place to be! So yes, less expensive but still not cheap. If you worked 40 hours a week at minimum wage you couldn't afford to live alone. My house in the middle of bumblefuck is way more afforadable but I'm also cohabitating and need to drive 20+ minutes to get to a grocery store. Greenville/Anderson/Spartanburg is not a cheap place to live anymore at all. If I were making minimum wage I would have been super screwed and forced to live with roomates just to afford healthcare or food or basic necessities which I did not want to be doing as an adult. It's not as bad as CA for sure, but it's not great either.

My point being, yay real jobs. They be super cool cause I have bills to pay you guys . Also, I can turk while working because I work from my home office 90% of the time so I don't exactly have anyone telling me what to do most days.

I blame my quick search and preconceived notions regarding rents in southern and midwestern areas. A more thorough search does reveal that it is a good deal pricier than my initial claim. Still cheaper here and there, but certainly some new development commands the same prices as California (guess they're consistent, huh).

Very nice on working from home. A remote job is nice.

 

Come to State College, one bedroom apartments are $650-$700 in a very very nice neighborhood. We are paying 2 1-bedroom apartments for $650 each next to each other instead of a one 2 bedroom apartment, since if we need, the other one can be easily turned into a guest home/office/fuck you I am sleeping alone tonight/football season/airbnb/couch surfing/we got drunk so can we crush here/etc....
