Hi! Part time copy editor Bird here. That's a very common quibble that basically came about because every thing was often smashed togther into a compound word incorrectly while also still used apart when a person wanted to emphasize a phrase via an adjective such as, "every single thing." It gradually became acceptable to use either version even if one is technically incorrect because it's two seperate words and not really a compound. On the other hand, words like every day and everyday are both acceptable uses, since one is an adjective while the other is an adverb. Every time is similar to everything, but has never been borked up enough to become its own word, although in some publications it is considered an acceptable alternate spelling. These things will make an editor or proofreader smash their heads into the wall because the english language is persnickety and often has rules that make NO FREAKING SENSE.

So basically, there is no good reason, it just is that way because of time and the insanity of english grammar. Please don't make me go back to editing this morning, where are the good hits you guys?!

 

A quick Google search shows it happened to @B1LLYBLANCO last month and went away on its own in a few minutes.
