I around 70% of my property tax is school tax.

 

Yeah that's strange considering most of the taxes typically don't go to the schools but other infrastructure and services.

In South Carolina, if you do not pay the taxes in full, including anything extra that they add on, they auction off your property once they are a year late. Then you have 364 days to pay all of the taxes in full to redeem your property. If you don't, then you lose the property. If your house does not sell at the tax auction, then anyone can walk into the courthouse and pay your taxes. In this case, you still have until the 364th day from the tax auction to redeem. If you do not, then again, you lose your property. I bought a house here for $400 because the taxes went unpaid for 2 years. I had to pay the second year and the first year that the deed was in my name, plus a $25 fee to transfer the deed to myself. Don't know what other states do.
