    Three times.

You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.

I think your memory must be gone, because The Hobbit was a whimsical fantasy novel, LOTR was more epic high fantasy adventure. Two completely different tones.

Yeah, Hobbit was whimsical as hell. Yeah it had seriousness, and some adult themes, but it was still very much so whimsical. Princess Bride certainly is too, but that's more a comedy, which isn't a requirement of whimsy. In my mind it's more about the way you tell the story. If you're focusing on the conflict, and action, versus the interactions of the characters, while being lighthearted about it.

Serious shit goes down, but the hobbit is light hearted to fault even when things are falling apart.

Another vote for it being whimsical. In the way Harry Potter books are whimsical, not satire/overt comedy

The overriding themes of The Hobbit were quite serious. Yes, hobbits are fanciful, odd and eccentric. The issues dealt with in the book are quite dark and serious, especially given the times in which Tolkien wrote it.

Only the first few Harry Potter books have that whimsy, though, it got way too serious after the fourth book. I mean, how could you argue that The Hobbit isn't whimsical, did you forget the trolls? The whole thing with the casks floating down the river? The riddle game? Did we read the same book?

Damn, I don't think we're talking about the same book after all.

While a lot of dark shit does happen, I think the saving factor is that it always goes from a tragedy to humor and a bunch of crazy dwarfs and a hobbit finding themselves in absurd situations. It's the balance between the two that determines, to me.

For that reason, I'd agree with what was said about Harry Potter. It did the same thing, but as @morweeg said, they do eventually move away from that in later books, to be 100% death and depression (still recovering), but the early ones it was basically just fucking off in class until someone tried to kill him, then it was over, lol.

Yeah, @Squatcobbler is clearly wrong and I'm right, though. Going on an adventure to slay a dragon and win back your gold is pretty whimsical. I bet he doesn't think The Once and Future King is whimsical either.

Tons of children's books are presented whimsically, and are extremely serious, thematically. These are things that can coexist
