I had one professor who did that as well, except this was in 1990 before ebooks. So instead he got it printed as cheaply as possible, and warned us at the beginning of the semester that the binding was so cheap that we'd find pages would be falling out by the end of the class if we weren't super careful. But it also meant we only paid $10 for the text for that particular class.

Luckily I have a full time administrative position, because this is the state of teaching in universities right now:

Too expensive to hire full-time professors and have to tenure them, so hire a bunch of adjunct. Adjunct = part-time. My union dictates I can teach no more than 10 credits a year. A year. At just under $1500 per credit, I can make at most $15,000 salary (before taxes) with no benefits since it's part time. That's also assuming the uni offers courses in credit amounts that I can even get to 10. I usually can't break 8.
