Cannot tell you how many times I've gotten into trouble because an innocuous word in New Zealand culture is, umm, not innocuous here.

I also like to use obscure words in emails, just because I can, and dammit it's a word and if I come across a perfect situation for it then I should be able to use it! But then invariably it causes confusion and lengthy explanations and the email chain gets way longer than it should've been.

My favorite recent example was from three or four months ago when I got to use the word "anachronistic" in an email discussing something to do with databases, and it was 100% appropriate to the context! The lead wrote back and said he looked it up and still didn't understand what it meant and could I kindly tell him what-the-f*** I actually was trying to say, please.
