That's just sad. I'll eat box mix, and I totally get the reasons for using it, but it's definitely not the same. (I also dislike using condensed soup in dishes but I still smiled and ate my condensed soup rice casserole someone made me this week cause I mucho appreciate someone feeding me) I'm totally happy to do the bulk of the cooking or make the centerpiece for all our group stuff, because I get that I'm a crazy kitchen Grinch and I enjoy the effort, but I positively melt down internally with that kind of attitude.

My wife went to culinary school to be a baker and she will act all calm when people talk how much better box cakes/cookies are but develop an eye twitch while the conversation goes on. It's kinda funny... but then I remember I do the same thing when someone calls all video games "nintendo" or something. So then it's slightly less funny.

We had to earn it where I grew up. I will gladly direct someone to a plethora of great online recipes, and in fact , if mine came from online, I'm happy to point you to the direct source! Family recipes and ones I inherited by helping out in the kitchen or swapping someone for a prized recupe of theirs tho? That's personal to me and it's a tradition and I uphold it. I regularly feed people for no reason other than they are hungry. I have an open kitchen policy and people stop by all the time for a snack or a meal because I'll always whip up something for them. But, I earned my Nana's recipes and I'm proud of that- if you don't wanna take some time to earn it, that's cool, but don't DEMAND something, go google it or open a recipe book. Plenty of people have come over to watch a movie or whatever and make some food with me and it's a great time. My Nana Bunny was the most important family figure in my entire life and I'll 100% keep her family traditions alive and pass them on the same way she did and her mom before her and her mom before her.

Some people don't use written recipes. They've just made it so much they know. You just have to watch them and figure it out.
That's how my mom got her grandpa's SOS recipe. Nobody bothered to get his coconut or pineapple cake recipes though and I was a picky eater as a child and never even tasted them:( Everybody's always said how good they were but 2 daughters and 5 grandkids and not one of them learned how to make it.
Same with my grandma's biscuits. She tried teaching her kids how to make them but her measurements were not really helpful. "Here honey, get some shortening' "how much?" "This much" holds out a pile of shortening on her hand...."That's not a measurement!"
At least I have a video of her making those so I could potentially still learn one day.

I don't know why, but this randomly reminded me of an episode of Hell's Kitchen where a contestant made her "special dish" using marinara sauce from a jar. Gordon Ramsey spit it out.
