ODE TO TOM THE TURKEY

My life is filled with such care and ease,
Why I can eat anything I please.

As a Tom I strut my stuff before the prettiest Hens,
And I eat myself into oblivion in my turkey pen.

The hens love my wonderful wattle, snood, and physic;
Always pecking at my feathers, and kissing at my beak.

But there’s been some talk around this town;
It seems something terrible is about to go down.

It appears word has it that they are talking of doing me in;
Of beheading, gutting, stuffing, and wrapping me in tin.

Well, I’m a Turkey and I have something to say;
Who in the world decided I should be the meal of this day?


It’s a forest I tell you, they’re giving me a raw deal;
To fatten me up deceitfully and make me the meal.

They say it’s over now, no matter which way I look;
Or as the old saying goes, “My goose is cooked.”

But I tell you, “I protest, I will not go down without a fight”;
To eat a poor, innocent, defensive, turkey, well, it just isn’t right!

Dear Tom Turkey, you should know that once there was a chance for you.
A man named Franklin, smart and kind thought the same thing too.

A bird so proud and showy with a waddle on his beak,
Would make a lovely national bird not a meal once upon a week.

But alas, my dear feather-friend a problem was in sight.
You see ’til then, dear Franklin must have not had a bite.

You see there’s not much else that goes so well with stuffing,
Mashed potatoes. Sweet Potatoes.
Cranberries. Nope, there’s nothing.

So die a hero’s death, I assure you that it’s true.
We just can’t eat TOFUrkey. It just really wouldn’t do.
