The bell is a great idea for training animals to go outside. Works better with some than others.

We put one up and I would hit my dog's paw on it ever time I let her out to pee. (Note. she was 5 years old when we adopted her, so not a puppy and easily trainable...foreshadowing...)

After about a week we heard the bell and got all excited. Went to the door and it was the cat. Asking to go outside. From then on, only the cat used the bell when she wanted to go outside.

It's been years and years, that cat has passed on, the bell is still there, and the dog acts like she's never seen it before whenever I still hit it with her paw thinking maybe, some day, she'll catch on.

However, I did train her to pee on command outside by using the phrase, "Go pee pee!" whenever she peed on walks. Now if I tell her to go pee pee she squats and pees.
