I think 200x200 is the full size you see when looking at a profile, probably turns out better shrinking the 200x200 jpg's than it does the gif's.
What if you manually made the gif 96x96 pixels? That's what I did to mine so it would be more pixel-perfect. Maybe the forum resizes things weirdly.
