Not usually, but it's not unheard of. The HDD is mechanical so it does fail eventually, and not always just 100% dead. Sometimes they die...
Okay. Those are the usual suspects that peg the HDD. Let me google a bit and I'll reply if I can think of anything else to check.
You are correct. Perhaps windows security is running a disk scan? Have you checked to see if it's running?
open settings, then updates and security this will show you windows update. is it downloading anything or installing anything?
try opening the microsoft store. hit the 3 dots in the upper right hand corner and select downloads and updates. see if it is downloading...
lots of things it could be, and it would be really hard to troubleshoot it without seeing what you see could be a virus, could be a HDD starting...
