I can understand if they decide to be late and expect the late fee, because that is what happens when you are late. My daughter does competitive dance and on January 1st your account has to be squared, but comp fees are also due on January 1st, that meant a 780 payment. I usually pay her dance tuition on the 22nd of each month (hubby is paid 1 time a month because he is disabled and we opted in to long term disability thankfully), my dumb ass forgot that tuition is actually due the 1st and I always pay a small late fee. But because this is mid year check I'm getting a 65$ late fee, that is my bad. No one to blame but me for not being more diligent. tl/dr I paid 780 and forgot 200 more was due the 1st, bad on me

Right. You're late, pay the late fee. I don't suggest doing that often because if you're my tenant I will ask you to move out if you can't pay on time as you agreed in the contract.

However, I truly have no sympathy when the issue is Christmas. It's not a surprise. You know it's coming. Budget. And isn't the best gift a roof over your kid's head?

I could go on and on. I know there can be surprises and gotchas, and if someone is consistently on time and has a "whoops" or out of the blue event, I get it. But Christmas? No. Nope nope nope. I'm also this sympathetic on the 4th of July. Some fireworks are legal here and I don't accept excessive Fireworks purchases as a valid excuse for paying late, either, lol.
