Well both words are short for the term "SODA POP" so that makes us mid-westerners more efficient. And there is no excuse for the southern term 'coke'. :)

When I used to take my homemade sauce to the bar, I had a friend tell me it would be less painful to suck on his lite lighter than eat my sauce. :)

Where I live in Alabama, soda/pop/soda-pop are called "Coke", no matter what the brand is.

I do know when I was growing in Louisiana, every type of drink was a coke. Even a Pepsi was a coke. What do you want? I want a coke. What kind of coke. I'll have a Dr. Pepper coke. Or just a regular coke.

It was also Breakfast, Dinner, and Supper, not Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner.

"Fixing to" was also a common phrase.

I could go on and on.

I've pretty much abandoned Southern speak, but I certainly have a connection to it.

One of my colleagues is from the south and refers to all SUVs as "Jeeps". Theoretically, she's not wrong, but when Jeep is a brand, you sound silly.

Work in fast food down south and you'll get used to saying "Do you want a coke, or do you want a coke"

I was taught that dinner was the largest meal of the day, while supper is always the evening meal. So breakfast, lunch, dinner makes sense on most days, but if you have a large meal at midday like on a holiday, that's dinner and the evening meal is supper if it's smaller.

But Tacobell already solved that by inventing the 4th meal.
