I'm going to do a month-long study where I note down times when my roommate is and is not asleep. I swear he sleeps at least 14 hours a day.

Yes, but he also has zero hobbies which is where I think the actual issue is.

 

Get him to the gym. Lifting weights is a nice hobby. Having zero hobbies and being overweight and also sleeping 12+ hours a day isn't healthy, and according to my armchair psychiatrist degree, possibly also indicative of depression.

 

Two birds with one stone?

 

I'm positive he's depressed, but I think the depression comes from his general outlook on life. He was going to the gym religiously a few years back, but it didn't catch him any extra tail by default, so he stopped going. He gets upset that people don't want to hang out with him, but it's because he has zero hobbies and therefore nothing to talk about. It's an irritating cycle to watch.
