Description: This questionnaire will assess your impressions of the cognitive complexity of certain animal behaviors, drawn from 8 functionally distinct categories of behavior. In each section, you will be presented with three to four descriptions of animal behavior, each from a different species, and asked to rank the behaviors on a scale from 1 to 10. Below the full description will be a short summary phrase, to serve as a memory aid while you compare behaviors to each other.

Don't try to make answers from different sections "line up" with each other; rate each behavior only against others in the same section.
Rather than trying to calibrate the number values of your answer to number values you gave in previous sections, use this range to indicate the distribution; that is, only use 1 or 10 when you want to indicate that two behaviors seem farther apart than other behaviors in the survey, not that a behavior seems particularly high or low in an absolute sense. Or, in other words, your ratings in each section should be "centered" around the middle, but your distributions should be calibrated with respect to one another. Ties are acceptable.

In assessing the sophistication of a behavior, you might consider various factors, including whether learning is implied, how flexible a behavior seems, whether it's working memory-intensive, etc. You may want to ask yourself, "How surprised would I be if a frog did this?"
