rejections usually fall into the "I can just IRB/talk to the reasonable person and get paid" or "this isn't worth my time, fuck it"

or just be an ass and go straight irb, but that's a lot of effort without waiting first.

 

LOL! The IRB would simply forward your email back to Jonathan with a message "Please fix this. Pretty please, with a cherry on top." ...Now if you were actually a research subject in a clinical trial in which Jonathan was injecting you with an experimental drug and didn't pay you the $500 promised at the end of the trial, then the IRB would lose their shit a little bit.

EDIT: IRB's really wig-out when: 1) Research subject privacy is compromised. 2) Something is done to a research subject that was not first spelled out in agonizingly detailed detail in the IRB application. 3) When subjects participate in a research trial that was not IRB approved first.

I'm sorry to say that disputes over compensation under $25 probably won't elicit much of a reaction from an IRB, unless several dozen people all complain to the IRB at the same time. The IRB will give absolutely zero f**ks about the people who were rejected and then bonused because in their eyes, proper compensation was paid out.

 

Every last one of you need to take it up with the IRB !!! This is yet another example of a requester that needs to be reported because of their heedless, cruel, and unacceptable exploitation of workers.

When did I say don't talk to the guy first?
I mean, I asked if you wrote him. I only suggested you write him if you haven't already. I didn't mean to suggest your first email should be a threat. I do apologize if I was unclear.

I rarely recommend anything that doesn't work for me personally. That line about writing the department head may seem overblown but hell hath no fury like a woman scorned and I can't tell you how many fake scammy rejections got overturned with that one promise after several attempts to contact them unsuccessfully, with apologies no less for their error came their swift reply.

I don't sit back and allow requesters to penalize me for their mistakes or lack of foresight. I always try the civil approach first, several times before I pull out the big guns. And, so far, it's worked like a charm.

But to each their own. It was only friendly advice, but maybe I should have worded it more clearly. I truly only meant to be helpful and encouraging.
