Honestly though, does anybody have any suggestions to meet IRL friends past high school? My HS friends are toxic drug users. I've tried meet up groups ranging from things I'm into to things I was just willing to try, and my general experience from them has been that people aren't there to really meet friends as much as you'd think. I've constantly gotten, "wow! you're so brave for coming here by yourself!!!!!" and kind of every time been an outcast because people bring their friends to the group. It gets old being told I'm "brave." I work with like 4 middle aged men who are married so work gives me nothing to go off of. I moved around a lot before coming back to my home town so I feel out of the loop, I guess, even though I'm not new to my city.

I'm a huge Expanse fan. Watched it a couple times already. Did the rereads on r/theexpanse after season 2 ended.

 

I've been lurking here for a little while. I started turking back near the end of the summer. I'm usually not even logged into my account, but I decided to start trying to be more active here and meet the turking community :3

 

Season fucking 3, man. Can't wait.

 

You can buy hamburgers in a can out of a vending machine. That's not normal. I want them to come from a shitty dive at 3am.

Some people I know use meetup.com, sounds sketchy, but it's pretty straightforward.

 

That's the problem though I've been to like, 8ish meet ups and most people bring a familiar friend and then tell me "I'm so brave" for coming on my own. Like, I don't want to be singled out for coming by myself to meet people, I thought that was the point of them!

All of the experiences I'm talking about are from meetup.com events mostly, one outside of. I've tried everything from running to divorce to dogs to beer meet ups and for whatever reason people always bring a close friend and congregate and call me "brave" for coming alone. I've made a couple superficial facebook friends from them, but it's almost always people coming with their own groups and congregating amongst themselves for some reason.

 

I've found that some meetups are better than others for meeting new people. The food/wine one had a lot of people who knew each other already and were being insular, but the dog walking one was more inlcusive to new folks. I also have made buddies through outright introducing myself to folks at the airport, dog park, etc.

IIRC, Bumble or something even has a friend dating app (meeting new friends ,not actually dating them).
