I have a no politics at dinner rule for this very reason.

Matt's mom sees me cooking or dinner with a crowd as the perfect time to "educate" me. She found out it was the perfect way to get kicked out of my house until she could behave. Just about none of my friends or family agree on things and my dinner table is not the place to fight it out. Dinner is for polite conversation or you're not eating my dinner, hmmph!

Matt came back from goofing off in the woods to find Matt's mom sitting on our porch. By the time she came back in, she just drank her wine in silence. It was the most peaceful moment of the day!

She already dislikes me and I don't think it will change, but she can at least be polite in our home when I'm the one feeding her, ya know?

 

My own son won't even attend.
