So many parents want to kill people who do that. Thanks! For giving my kid a really loud toy.

But I always loved musical gifts. And my kiddo has been playing piano for 10 year now. Encourage music when young!! Give any gifts! My kid has consistently played the piano but he also took viola and drums in school band just to learn other ways of reading music.

There's so many cute kid-sized instruments too. Like, did you know they made toddler-sized toy grand pianos?

Yeah, it's annoying, but I always try to get my nephews(and my cousins too) gifts that'll encourage them to think instead of just another doll or whatever to play with. Last year everyone also got a book with their Christmas gifts, and I'll probably do that again this year.

Holy chit it worked. The cat is on a tear throughout the house, being nutzballs, but suddenly...tree is invisible again.

She, apparently, can't see white lights.

However, she is also staring at the dead fireplace as if wondering when the pretty flames will be back.

Besides, they get enough toys from their other relatives and it's a better gift than socks.

It's awesome to do that. Unstructured play is awesome.

Perhaps my kid would have turned out this way without music, but he's a 4.0 AP student and I strongly suspect engaging that musical area of the brain and him learning the value of hard work, practice, struggling to learn a new "language" (I can't read music for shit...) has helped him be a fantastic student. It certainly didn't make him a worse student!

That's so awesome! Good for you! I agree completely about introducing and encouraging music when young. The relative who babysat me would play her organ and piano for me alllll day long, then she'd sing me songs from the '20s and '30s to lull me to sleep. I didn't pick up anything until drums in high school (which my dad happily bought me, bless him haha) and have always wanted to learn/relearn the piano. It's no surprise your kiddo took up drums too - my drum teacher told me how similar drums are to piano, since it utilizes both arms and both feet at the same time. Multitasking at its best!

That sounds super adorable and now I have to look that up.

And now all I can imagine is Schroder bent over on his little baby piano and how he deserved an upgrade.

They're both percussion instruments, so they really do have a lot in common. At the time kiddo did drums he didn't use feet, it was just the school band where all the used was snare drums, but it was still awesome to listen to him practice.

Listening to the viola, however, was not so awesome. Kiddo said it even hurt his ears to listen to him play as his ears are "tuned" to for music now and he could tell he was playing like crap. He was only in the 4th grade then and was all, "Wow, I super suck at this..." But he now reads a different scale of music, so that is helpful.

Now I get to go outside. Said kiddo finally got out of our one bathroom so I could get into it .

This book is a little unrelated but reading that just made me think of it: https://www.amazon.com/dp/1400033535/?tag=thtv02-20

Oliver Sacks is (was) a neurologist who wrote books about amazingly crazy brain things, they're always so interesting. It always (no pun intended...) blows my mind to think about how much we don't actually know about our own brains.
