Hello there, again!

Hey everybody, it's been a while! Some of you may remember me from the mTurkGrind of years ago, having a username taken from the main character in Jean Paul Sartre's Nausea, Antoine Roquentin. If you do, hello again! And if you don't, hello to you too! I stopped going to the forums pretty abruptly in early 2015 after I realized how much of my life mTurk was taking away. Despite by no means taking mTurk quite seriously enough to make significant money, I really was letting it dominate my life. One more bubble hell of a survey and I'd have lost my mind. Toss in my views regarding labor issues and I was really sick of it all.

And yet, here I am again.

So here's a little about me: My name's Patrick, and I live in Buffalo, NY. I turned thirty this year and am extremely unhappy about it, but thankfully don't look terribly old yet. Last year I made the decision to go back to school, which is financially catastrophic and mentally catastrophic and I don't know if I like it that much but I'm still doing it. My username is stolen from a song on one of my favorite albums. When I'm not at school I'm still working at the awful beer store I've told myself I was going to quit half a decade ago. Whoops. I'm going back to school for computer science now and have a degree in film, which I (obviously) did not find a job in.

I like music a lot and just recently got to see Slowdive, a band that's meant a lot to me since I was like 15 or something, which I'm still elated about. I never thought I'd get the chance since they hadn't made an album since 1995 and also because Buffalo isn't exactly on every band's "must play" cities. I also like movies where nothing much happens, books (when I can focus my attention on them), and some video games.

I've been letting my hair grow out a lot since you've all last seen me. I guess, at 30, I want to let it grow while it still can. Also I've had long hair for a lot of my life, and so has my dad, etc. Here's my ugly mug in a dressing room in which I was getting fitted for my friend's wedding a few months ago:

It feels like forever ago since I was last here, but we live in weird and bad times where something just a month ago seems like it happened last year.

Anyway, enough rambling. If you want to grill me on anything, please do! I'm looking forward to getting back in the flow of things (boy I've forgotten a lot)!

Oh and @Tuff Ghost I rarely do surveys anymore. So I totally understand what you are talking about.

 

Yeah, I'll sometimes do them on Prolific because they usually seem better than mTurk surveys, but there are so few on there at a time that one certainly can't make much doing them.

Also, I would absolutely be interested in any current day mTurk meta tips. There's a whole new website Amazon has now too?

 

Totally understand the obsession and neglect you speak of.

It's still very real and alive.

There are two sites. https://worker.mturk.com and the old www site. Both have separate captcha and PRE pools.

Oh I guess I should also mention that mturk is killing off www in December so everyone is getting ready for that change right now. Lots of your old scripts if they relied directly on www stuff instead of the iframe may have broken ect.
